Talchum, the Korean mask dance, is an expressive and dynamic art form that combines dance, drama, and music to tell stories. Performed by dancers wearing tal (the traditional Korean mask), talchum was historically used to critique societal issues, such as corruption among the ruling class or the struggles of ordinary people. The performances are often infused with humor and satire, engaging the audience through lively interaction. While each region in Korea developed its unique style of talchum, with variations in mask designs, dance movements, and themes, the core of talchum remains a celebration of cultural identity, communal spirit, and the shared human experience. Today, talchum is a cherished cultural heritage, offering insight into Korea’s rich history and continuing to bring people together through its powerful storytelling and expressive dance. About the Gyeongseodo Folk Music Group This group, composed of experts with 10 to 25 years of experience, is dedicated to sharing and reinterpreting the beauty of Korean traditions. - September 2024-February 2025 9AM-4PM Korean Cultural Centre SA 267 Waterkloof Road, Brooklyn, Pretoria The Korean Cultural Centre SA (KCCSA) is proud to present a special exhibition dedicated to the Korean alphabet, Hangeul. Running from September through February of the following year, this exhibition celebrates the scientific brilliance, cultural significance, and aesthetic charm of Hangeul, Korea's premier cultural heritage. Curated to introduce Hangeul in an engaging and accessible way, the exhibition showcases cultural products inspired by Hangeul that integrate seamlessly into daily life. This initiative, in collaboration with the National Hangeul Museum, features innovative Hangeul-themed items created through competitions held from 2019 to 2023. The exhibition will display contributions from seven artists and eighteen companies, featuring a diverse collection of 32 Hangeul-themed products. Visitors can explore a variety of items, including jewelry such as earrings and necklaces adorned with Hangeul characters, along with decorative furniture, ceramics, office supplies, and more. In addition to the main exhibit, interactive sections will allow visitors to engage with Korean history and culture through board games featuring Hangeul. The exhibition will also offer a range of educational and hands-on activities, including basic Korean language classes and Hangeul-themed craft workshops. Come explore the fascinating history of the Korean alphabet's creation and discover the beauty and utility of Hangeul! Gunwoo Park, a distinguished cellist from South Korea celebrated for his exceptional talent and international accolades, will make his first visit to South Africa this spring and will be performing with esteemed SA musicians at concerts set to be held in Stellenbosch and Johannesburg. Don't miss this incredible opportunity to meet with one of the leading stars of K-classical music. We look forward to sharing these exceptional musical experiences with you. Gunwoo PARK Gunwoo Park began his musical journey at 16 and quickly rose to prominence, graduating as the top performer from Yonsei University in South Korea and later earning the highest honors at Folkwang Universität der Künste and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in Germany. He made history as the first Korean cellist to reach the final along with a special jury prize at the prestigious Prague Spring International Music Competition. Park's international accolades include 1st place at the 2017 International Cello Competition in Italy, 2nd place at the Young Virtuosos International Music Competition in Bulgaria, and top prizes in several domestic competitions. Notable performances include collaborations with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and appearances at major European and Asian venues. A recipient of scholarships from DAAD and other prestigious foundations, Park is recognized for his contributions to solo and chamber music and has been honored with the 33rd Music Journal Emerging Artist Award. Talchum, the Korean mask dance, is an expressive and dynamic art form that combines dance, drama, and music to tell stories. Performed by dancers wearing tal (the traditional Korean mask), talchum was historically used to critique societal issues, such as corruption among the ruling class or the struggles of ordinary people. The performances are often infused with humor and satire, engaging the audience through lively interaction. While each region in Korea developed its unique style of talchum, with variations in mask designs, dance movements, and themes, the core of talchum remains a celebration of cultural identity, communal spirit, and the shared human experience. Today, talchum is a cherished cultural heritage, offering insight into Korea’s rich history and continuing to bring people together through its powerful storytelling and expressive dance.
