South Korea and Türkiye make a special movie night highlighting friendship built during Korean War
Last Friday, 8 December, together with the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria and Yunus Emre Enstitüsü, the Korean Cultural Centre SA (KCCSA) had a special screening for the 2017 Turkish film "Ayla: The Daughter of War."
The event celebrated a decades-long friendship between Türkiye and South Korea, and reflected on timeless—and timely—values of friendship, love, family, and humanity as we live through troubled times.

"Ayla: The Daughter of War" is a South Korean-Turkish historical drama that tells the true story of Süleyman Dilbirliği, a sergeant in the Turkish Brigade, during the Korean War in the early 1950s. The film revolves around the extraordinary bond that develops between Süleyman and a young orphaned Korean girl named Ayla. Amid the harsh realities of war, Süleyman finds Ayla and takes her under his wing, caring for her like a father.
The film explores themes of humanity, compassion, and the impact of war on individuals. Set against the backdrop of the Korean War, it portrays the struggles and sacrifices of those involved, emphasizing the universal connections that can be formed in the face of adversity.
