The Korean Cultural Centre in South Africa (KCCSA) is proud to present a retrospective exhibition celebrating the life and work of Lee Jung-seop, one of Korea’s most influential modern artists. The exhibition will open on 18 March 2025 at KCCSA in Pretoria and will be on view until 30 June 2025.

Lee Jung-seop (1916–1956) is renowned for his emotionally charged artworks that depict themes of family, longing, and resilience. His expressive and bold brushstrokes capture the essence of Korea’s turbulent modern history, offering a window into the artist’s personal struggles and aspirations. From his iconic Ox series to his poignant silver foil paintings, Lee’s works continue to inspire generations of artists and art enthusiasts worldwide.

Born in Pyeongwon, in what is now North Korea, Lee’s artistic journey began at Osan School, where he developed a deep appreciation for traditional Korean motifs. He later studied at the Imperial Art School in Japan before transferring to Bunka Gakuin, where he honed his distinctive style influenced by Western art movements such as Fauvism. Despite facing financial hardship and personal turmoil, Lee’s relentless passion for art led him to create some of the most celebrated works in Korean modern art history.

The exhibition at KCCSA will showcase a selection of Lee Jung-seop’s works, including his dynamic depictions of bulls, intimate family portraits, and dreamlike compositions that reflect his emotional depth. These works are print editions provided by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, ensuring visitors have access to high-quality reproductions of the artist’s masterpieces.

The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by an array of special programs, including guided tours, lectures, and interactive workshops that explore Lee’s artistic techniques and influences. Visitors will have the opportunity to gain deeper insight into the artist’s creative process and the cultural significance of his work.

The exhibition is open to the public free of charge from 09:00 to 16:00 on weekdays, excluding weekends and public holidays. For more information, please contact KCCSA at 012 001 9204 or via email at kccsa@korea.kr.
