This workshop offers a deep dive into the music, rhythms, and representative dance movements of both nations, as well as a hands-on mask-making experience.

What is TALCHUM (탈춤)?

Talchum, the Korean mask dance, is an expressive and dynamic art form that combines dance, drama, and music to tell stories. Performed by dancers wearing tal (the traditional Korean mask), talchum was historically used to critique societal issues, such as corruption among the ruling class or the struggles of ordinary people. The performances are often infused with humor and satire, engaging the audience through lively interaction. While each region in Korea developed its unique style of talchum, with variations in mask designs, dance movements, and themes, the core of talchum remains a celebration of cultural identity, communal spirit, and the shared human experience. Today, talchum is a cherished cultural heritage, offering insight into Korea’s rich history and continuing to bring people together through its powerful storytelling and expressive dance.

About the Gyeongseodo Folk Music Group

This group, composed of experts with 10 to 25 years of experience, is dedicated to sharing and reinterpreting the beauty of Korean traditions. They actively engage in educational activities to pass on and promote traditional culture to the next generation.
