K-CINEMA CLUB × THE LONG TAKE FILM CLUB: Better Together – A Night of Unsettling Encounters and Unexpected Connections

What’s better than one film club?
Correct, two film clubs! For spooky season is enjoyed better together!
The Long Take Film Club and K-Cinema Club join forces to bring two eerie Korean shorts from this year’s BIFAN (Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival) alongside acclaimed drama Aloners.
Join us at The Bioscope for a special evening of Korean cinema exploring isolation, grief, unsettling encounters and the human connections that bring us back together.
The programme features the internationally acclaimed Aloners (2021), which follows Jina, a call centre worker who lives, eats and sleeps alone, with her phone as her closest companion. When she is asked to train a friendly new colleague, while facing an intrusive neighbour and calls from her estranged father, the carefully constructed walls around her begin to shift.
Praised for its quiet and perceptive exploration of the personal experience of aloneness in contemporary urban life, the film was selected for major international festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, San Sebastián International Film Festival and Hong Kong International Film Festival, while also receiving the Grand Prix at the Osaka Asian Film Festival, Best New Director at the Cairo International Film Festival, Best Actress at the Torino Film Festival, and the Special Jury Prize and NETPAC Jury Award at the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas.
The programme also introduces two fresh voices in Korean filmmaking through Magma and Seventy Times Seven. From a village haunted by long-buried secrets to a forbidden séance and a mysterious phantom nun, the two shorts bring supernatural intrigue to an evening centred on what draws people apart and brings them back together.
Discussion sessions will follow both the short-film programme and the feature screening. Watch together, think together and keep the conversation going after the credits.
